A fence isn't always the answer. Sometimes the better move is a living wall - something that grows with your property, looks great year-round, and doesn't feel like you're boxing yourself in.

That's exactly what we went with here. A clean row of arborvitae planted along the side of the structure, with river rock laid in as the ground cover. No mulch to refresh every season. No weeds fighting through bare soil. Just a setup that handles itself.

The river rock does a lot of the heavy lifting on the maintenance side. It keeps moisture in around the root zones, discourages weed growth, and gives the whole bed a polished, finished look without requiring constant attention. Pair that with arborvitae - which are naturally narrow, fast-growing, and stay green all year - and you've got a screening solution that checks every box.

What we like about this approach is how it opens up your options. You still have usable space. The area stays accessible. But anyone looking in from the neighboring property or the street gets a natural buffer that looks intentional, not like an afterthought. It's privacy without the closed-in feeling a solid fence can create.

This kind of setup fits a lot of situations - tight side yards, spaces behind outbuildings, spots where a fence would feel too heavy. If you've got an area that needs screening without losing its character, this is worth considering.
